Research Notes: Why Smell Moves Faster Than Every Other Sense*

Catch a smell and something shifts before you've had time to think about it. That's not a coincidence of timing — it's a wiring difference.

The detour every other sense takes

Sight, sound and touch all pass through a relay point in the brain first — a kind of switchboard that sorts and filters information before it reaches the areas that handle emotion and meaning. That extra stop takes time, and it's the same route for almost everything you sense.

Smell skips it. Signals from your nose travel a shorter, more direct path straight to the parts of the brain that handle emotion and memory — no switchboard, no detour.

What "direct" actually means here
