Sandalwood: The Underdog in Peak State
Share
Most of the stone is loud. Pink grapefruit, peppermint, lemon, eucalyptus. Bright, sharp, impossible to ignore, which is the point. It’s the shower before the day gets a say.
Then there’s sandalwood, sitting underneath all of it.
You won’t smell it first. You’ll smell the citrus hit and the cool mint rush. But as the steam builds and the loud notes settle, something warm and creamy-woody stays behind. It’s the last thing to fade and the reason the scent doesn’t vanish in the first thirty seconds.
Why Sandalwood Is in There
In perfumery, sandalwood is a base note. Light, bright scents burn off fast, and sandalwood is the slow one that anchors them. Without it, a citrus-and-mint blend is a flash. With it, you get a shower that smells like something from the first breath to the towel.
It’s also one of the oldest scent materials around. People have carved it, burned it as incense, and worn it for centuries, because it smells like warm wood and skin and something just out of reach. We didn’t put it in Peak State for the story, though. We put it in because every bright blend needs something to stand on.
What the Research Says
Sandalwood isn’t just doing aromatic heavy lifting; it behaves unusually in scientific literature, too.
In clinical studies examining botanical inhalation, sandalwood’s primary active constituent—alpha-santalol—revealed a rare dynamic: it was shown to increase physiological arousal markers (like heart rate and skin response), yet participants simultaneously self-reported feeling noticeably calmer, more attentive, and in an improved mood.
Most energising compounds stimulate by dialling up nervous tension. Sandalwood does the opposite: the research shows it supports genuine alertness without the wired feeling. In an energising morning blend, it acts as the anchor—keeping the high-octane citrus and mint grounded.
What It Feels Like
Think of the difference between a door slamming and a door that closes with a click. The grapefruit and peppermint open the morning. The sandalwood gives it some weight. It’s still energising, just not frantic.
That’s what we wanted. You’re already up. The kids are already up. The day is already asking things of you. You don’t need a spa moment, you need a few minutes in the shower that smell like you’ve got it together, even if you don’t yet.
Peak State: before the world needs you.
One stone, one shower, no new habit required. You’re getting in anyway.
